Exhibition NDSM Then
From 3 September 2022 to 29 January 2023, the NDSM-Herleeft Foundation will present the exhibition “NDSM Toen”, created in collaboration with NDSM-Fuse and Harmoniecorps Tuindorp (HCT).
In various Wunderkammer (former sea containers converted into huge display cases) made available to us by NDSM-Fuse, photos, objects and models bring NDSM back to life for a while from the moment of drawing-room design to the construction and launching of a ship, the docking phase of a supertanker and various repair works until the end of the shipyard in 1984.
As HCT has provided musical accompaniment at launchings from 1946 to 1979 and is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, they have also been given a place in this set. There, they showcase the history of 100 years of harmony in a bird's eye view.
An ongoing film about the construction of ms. Oranje, coupled with 2 videos of HCT, in which former members talk about Tuindorp and the harmony in particular, followed by a piece of music “Village in the City”, composed especially for HCT in connection with the 100th anniversary of Tuindorp Oostzaan in 2021.
In addition to this exhibition, there is the opportunity to go on a ramble through the shipbuilding shed, where historical relics remain from the NDSM era. A QR code explains what these objects and places served for.
In this way, the NDSM-Herleeft Foundation tries to generate more interest in the nautical industrial history of this shipyard and tries to make visible again what was accomplished by many thousands of workers at the time.
The exhibition “NDSM Toen” takes place in the large Shipbuilding shed (NDSM-loods) on the NDSM site, NDSM Plein 29, 1033 WC Amsterdam and admission is free. Opening hours are daily from 08.00 - 18.00. You are welcome to come and take a look.
